Pipe bursting is a trenchless sewer replacement method where a large cone shape head is hydraulically pulled by steel cable through the old sewer line, breaking apart the old pipe underground while at the same time pulling into place a new seamless pipe that is the same size or larger than the old pipe.

Pipe bursting specialists pull a new piece of flexible, fused pipe that has been made to run the length of pipe that needs to be replaced. The new section of fused flexible pipe is pulled behind a mechanical head, which is pulled by a hydraulic winch and cable.
